red passion! A touch of it becomes a non-color element. The splash in the eye that reads more like a focal point rather than a pillow, an architectural element rather than just a sofa. It is very "osez" when you talk about it but in reality it reads very sophisticated and not aggressive at all.

Ado Chale (b. 1928 Belgium) Over a career that spans nearly half a century, Ado Chale developed an international reputation for creating art furniture that incorporates exotic minerals and other decorative natural elements. As a young man instead of continuing in his father’s cabinet workshop, Chale studied ironwork. On a trip to Germany, he discovered the world of minerals in a Frankfurt “rock shop”. Gradually, a pastime became the focus of his career. He opened his own mineral shop on Brussels' famous Avenue Louise in 1965. Rather than just sell impressive specimens, he took pieces of malachite, mother-of-pearl, lapis lazuli, elephant tusk, petrified wood and other natural oddities and included them as the main decorative element in his own furniture creations. Chale often sourced these exotic materials on his travels to places such as India, Brazil, Afghanistan and Arizona. In addition to mineral mosaics suspended in resin-epoxy, drawing on his educational background, he has also completed works in cast metals. Chale’s low tables and consoles are the most sought after examples from his oeuvre. Many of his tables rest on his signature tripod bases. His work is included in numerous royal and public collections around the world.

Fred Brouard was born in 1944 in Caen, Normandy. He died in 1999. At the National School of Arts in Paris, he was encouraged by Henri-Georges Adam to further pursue his talent in the art of sculpting.

He soon partnered with such established sculptors as Alicia Penalba. He exhibited at the New School in Paris and at New York’s Sonnabend Gallery and at Eric Allart gallery.

You will find his pieces at auction at de Pury or at the Craig Van der Brulle in NYC.

It is seems contemporary design has washed out all that happened before the 1930s. But now that evrybody has been raving about the 40s, and then that the 50s and finaly 60s, I don't want us to start looking at the 80s as the new new thing. I propose to look backward and rediscover the beauty of real antique and their amazing work of craftmanship and design.
I am not proposing us to go back to traditional design but rather include those antiques in our new and modern spaces, making them more relevent.

Those projects bellow (all from estilo vivo) work because the space has been developed with the last final touch in mind. In those case, I just love the intrusion of antique silver sterlings service and candelabra in a otherwise modern environment. It softens the space and bring out wonderful memories of our grandmothers' house (without the flowery fabrics...)

The new Duke & Duke gallery in LA just had a show on one of my favorite designer, Mr. Come.
I admire his controlled and minimalist approach to molded glass. The opposite of the lavish use of color and shape of other glass artists (no name), he works with an elegance and a simplicity that is very hard to archive.

Italian designer and decorator Gabriella Crespi (1922), Gabrielle Crespi studied architecture and in the 1970s became one of the most successful Italian decorators. Her work is unique, very often numbered and signed. She was working with a lot of materials, such as mirror, bamboo and Plexiglas, but her creations in brass (or other metals) are most iconic. Crespi`s work is a real haute couture of the last century design. Pieces were inspired by the space-age era of the 1970s as well as spirituality of the Eastern Asia. In 1987 she closed the studio and to devote herself to studying Eastern spirituality.

Martin Scekely has a great retrospective a the Centre Pompidou this winter.
As a designer Szekely has two different focuses: designing furniture and objects for museums, private collectors and manufacturers, and working on major industrial projects. Pieces by Martin Szekely belong to the permanent collections of the world’s major museums, including the Centre Georges Pompidou and Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. Szekely, who enjoys rethinking the concept of each object, has a special talent for working with imposing industrial constraints. Very careful to respect technical specifications, he works with materials as diverse as carbon fiber, crystal, Corian, silver, resin and wood. For his works fo to Gallerie Kreo.

Designed by famed surrealist meret oppenheim in 1939 and red-edited by gavina in 1971, the traccia side table has imprinted footprints on a gold leaf (or platinum) top; the bottom of the table is painted gold or platinum. the base is polished cast bronze. this table is a personal favorite. like ms. oppenheim's most famous work "le dejeuner en fourrure", there really is nothing quite like it. traccia can be translated as footprint- like those of the fabulous bird walking across the surface of the table.

Swiss-born and Paris-based, Mattia Bonetti creates highly imaginative art design. His work is a showcase of "balance of exuberance and rigor" which is exactly what I believe a well curated interior should be.

John Dickinson (1920-82), a Californian decorator, is famous for his tables, his animalistic approach and the use of plaster. (SFmoma had a retrospective in 2004).

I lived in cities all my life. From Paris to London, From Sao Paulo to New York. I am a city girl and naturally my design reflects on those experiences. Yet, I believe one always needs counterbalance to that highly energetic, cultural, social life to find a personal retreat. We called ours "the cave". The one main activity there is to cook. To cook for one, to cook for a group of person, the result is this warm inviting moments of pure intimacy and simplicity.

Here are a few example of the right set of cook/friend/simple gathering places. Not minimalist, yet controlled, those spaces are not afraid of material, they charged in contrast and references.

Those kitchens play with the high contrast and the sense of scale. I like the solution of the blackened wood or the flat lacquer as neutral material against the wood and the richness of the other elements. Fornasetti's italian surrealism

I always believe a successful interior should be whimsical yet elegant. Who knew that better than milanese designer Piero Fornasetti? Fornasetti imaginatively transformed lamps, coffeepots, chairs and plates into agents of humor, provocation and meaning. He produced an endless stream of variations on his personal leitmotifs, including the human hand, the female face, luminescent fish, bizarre creatures of the deep and playing cards.
He son took the business over and his creation have the some wit than his father.

Sometimes, I really miss it. I wonder if we could make it happen in New York. A pre-war apartment, or a downtown loft with high ceiling that we re-interpret as a "un appartment Haussmanien". With a twist, of course. A few moulure, painted plaster, white preferred, reclaimed herringbone oak floor, double doors, ultra design kitchen, long curtains, a few antiques and very up to date whimsical design pieces.

I have been trying to convince our clients that natural wood in a bathroom is a wonderful material. Warm to the feet, easy to maintain (Just wipe it of, wax it yearly) and give that room the spa feel we all come to love. We have it in our country side house for 5 years, after millions of guest, kids and other not very careful people and the wood floor is impecable!

Emmanuel Babled’s designs encompass tradition, modernity, sacredness, consumption, artisanal production and sustainability. This unique mix gives his work a contemporary, poetic and transcultural character.

Originally from France, Babled’s design attitude has been influenced by 15 years of experience with Venetian glass blowers on the island of Murano. Today, he has been constantly involved in the design scene with his Milan office.

Basalt is a volcanic stone that has been used in architecture for centuries. It has a particularly rich history. It is quarried near Rome and was used by the ancient Romans to build roads and monuments. Examples of its uses in architecture can still be seen still today.

Basalts are rich in magnesium, feldspar, pyroxene and iron, with hints of olivine and amphibole; all of which are siliceous materials similar to those in a granite. Although Basalts boast the durability of a granite, they tend to have the consistent coloration, markings and subtlety of a limestone. The fissures and small holes in the surface are evidence of the earth’s natural gasses flowing through and escaping from the stone. These holes can be left in their natural state or can be filled, depending on the use of the stone and the clients’ aesthetic preference.

Reclaiming materials is not a new concept for designers. However, many recent interpretations are particularly interesting to admire and enjoy. A collection that caught my eye is the Tribeca Editions from Soren Rose Studio, a line-up of lighting options. This entire collection is handmade for a limited edition. Made from materials found in New York and California, the Tribeca Editions use brass and vintage parts to create retro chic lamps.

I don't usually look at veranda magazine, but it seems nowadays that modern comes from all type of sources. After enjoying the AD revamp, I will be closely watching the future issues of Veranda with their surprising mix of extreme traditionalism to rather inspiring modernism. I really appreciate that first image, as a perfect example of traditional elements in a modern setting. (that console is crazy beautiful). Those project are not really contemporary yet they have the three elements that are essential to create an interesting modern interior: risk taking, elegance and simplicity.

Modern VI: Classic and Modern Mix

That is the typical european style. Taking advantage of historical references, the environment is hardly touched. The moldings, the high ceiling, the windows and all other references to the past are preciously respected and then you throw in a few modern pieces. The client connects easily to the space through those references. The styles are juxtaposed in the same room and, as with any kind of mixing, it is simply a question a proportion, maintaining the proper scale and keeping colors and materials sympathic.

That could be kind of a mix of both previous style. No clutter in those rooms but rather a careful mix of choices. There are a few pieces that gives the room character, and antiquities are used as a composition. Modernist interior always comes in mind as a cold and rather unpleasant environment. Usually, we think minimalist, not really in touch with our senses. I believe it can be very different. I like to use a wide variety of pure material, used in the way nature created them, i.e. the planks as wide as a trunk, a slab of stone with strong heavy presence, raw steel, burnished bronze that lived. Human being needs to connect to their space with their senses, and raw modernism does just that.

A new serie! What is a contemporary interiors?

A friend of mine asked me about our project and how to describe them. Do I have more than one style? What are the options? As I had already drank a glass or two (Clicquot, because the summer finally came) I went to say, "well, really I work only in the contemporary realm of the interiors".

Then Clicquot helped me a bit and I could explain better.

The variations are limitless. So we have that natural contemporary house, the square contemporary loft, that soft contemporary pied a terre, that classy contemporary apartment, the edgy contemporary personal office and that classic contemporary financial office. And I talked also about the curated contemporary, the relaxed contemporary...

So if you think contemporary is that minimal and cold look of the 1990s, you are in for a few surprises in the next few postings.

Done By Christian Liaigre 10 years ago, they are the darling of interior designers and found their way to many other hotels and home. But one does not get tired of such a classic element. Kips Bay 2011, a great millésime

A great pleasure this weekend. I did my annual visit to Kips Bay House Show. And for the first time, I was blown away. It is like seeing my blog in real life. All my favorites were there. From Philippe Hiquily to Alexandre Loge, from Mattia Bonneti to Jacques Adnet. And many more.

Even to Moroccan rugs, the Industrial chic, the colors etc.
So basically, enjoy the last floor, the stairs, the living room and a few other rooms.

The art was classic contemporary, not really ground breaking but always a pleasure and just the amount of paintings, photos and prints in one house is a reason to go to see the show. It is a much better experience than a museum or a gallery as you get to see the pieces in a residential setting.

But please, oh please, may next year show have a real, creative, interesting kitchen! That is a challenge I would love to tackle.

If you desire a kitchen that does not look like it came on a container from Italia, that breaks the rule and has its own personality, then through away your catalog, and trust your architect. There are many other way to cook than the cookie cutter top and bottom cabinet with lacquer. Shake it up! (and yes, I would have like to find better examples, but God is in the detail and take your time, there are details in those kitchens!)

If I am fascinated by very curated spaces, I am also attracted by the other side of the spectrum. The casual elegance of a family house. An environment design for a large group of all ages where kids run free and nobody worries too much about the perfection of the furniture arrangement. Where things move and are displaced, are used and slightly damaged just enough to bring life in. The atmosphere is understated sophistication.

She starts from the natural world and immortalizes fragil moments in bronze and silver. Her pieces are in major art museums and you can find her at christofle and the Marlborough gallery.

Thoughts on neutral 4: Blacks

Blacks are deeep, moving, intimate and stricking. The strongest of the neutral, black allows anything. Ultra modern to ultra classic, busy to minimal, nothing goes wrong. All the art radiates, the accessories pop out as the furniture receeds. The fabric are simple, without pattern the material palette is reduced to nothing, black takes the stage!
When a client goes for black, I get excited as I know the result will be anything but boring.

Aery, fresh, casual, and ... hard to live with. There are a few tricks: slipcovers lacquer, painted floor, plastics. All materials that are easy to maintain, replace or fix. The white should be bright, like super white from B.M. or even better the fabulously luminous white from the Kaufman paint. I also love the white from Farrow and Ball but they are hard to maintain.
Now you have in your hands a canvas where everything un-white will pop up like a piece of art! Have fun!

The beige are still here, but there are ways to stay away from boring traditional beige interiors. First the beige is NOT CREAMY, no yellow whatsoever. It is more the color of you cappuccino in the morning, the candied chestnut, the light bronze pie crust. It is sweet but not vanilla ice-cream sweet, more adult dessert than kids treat. Then you need to be strong with the choice of furniture, no compromise, clearly contemporary. No risk taken as the color scheme will soften the room. And monochromatic works great from light to dark with texture variation. Subtle.

It is the trend, the big thing going on right now. Fashion & interiors... I have to say, not crazy about it when mixed with silver, it becomes too monochromatic. But make it modern all the way with crazy details, a bit of black and yes, warms elements: gold, fur, silk, wood... I like also a few traditional pieces, as the grey is, well , very current. So modern antiques, swedish chairs, flannel and velvet fabrics, long silk curtains, symmetry, all those works well with a grey monochromatic environment.
